Orienteering originated in Sweden in the early 1900s as a military exercise and came to the United States in the 1940s. In 1971 it was pronounced an official sport. Soon after the United States Orienteering Federation (USOF) was formed. Orienteering is a competitive sport which involves academic physical skills. From interpreting maps to distance running, orienteering is a very complex, yet fun sport that applies a mental and physical challenge. The orienteering program at Central is one that excels in teaching cadets these skills with fun practices and meets, as well as competition with other NJROTC units. Cadets are able to have fun and learn unique skills and can apply these skills in the field. During the cadets time in the NJROTC program, they have the opportunity to learn and love this sport. Every cadet is tought by experienced instructors and other senior cadets, and are all equally given the opportunity to succeed at the sport in which many do.
